直接打撃制空手の元祖であり、劇画『空手バカ一代』で一世を風靡した極真空手。その草創期に創始者・大山倍達と肩を並べるほどの人気と実力を誇ったのが、「ケンカ十段」と呼ばれた芦原英幸（1944〜1995）だった。
ノールールの実戦で鳴らした芦原は、100年に一人といえるほどの天才的な武道センスを発揮し、従来の空手技法を飛躍的・圧倒的に進化させた。
