自宅では難しかった本格的なトレーニングをローラー１本で実現させます。
コアの筋肉を効率的に刺激・動員するには、不安定な姿勢を作ることが有効です。その目的を達成するために、ピラティスを本格的に行うには、専用スタジオで専用の設備を使います。この効果はそのままに円柱のローラー１本でトレーニング出来るようにしたのがファンクショナルローラーピラティスというトレーニング法です。
このひとつである「ロールダウンロールアップ」は、背骨の動きを滑らかかつ強靭にするトレー二ング。まず、ローラー上に背中を乗せることで、背骨（胸部、鳩尾、腰部）をより明確に意識できるようになります。そして不安定な状態で上半身を巻き上げていくので、上手な背骨の使い方が自然に身に付いていきます。
